Let's celebrate MLK Day and take advantage of the frigid temps with a hike in Blue Mounds SP. WooHoo! -5 temps at hike time with an 18 mph NW wind....but lots of continuous shelter in the woods. Pack your woolies and park at the usual lot for this week's arctic adventure. Bring your snowshoes....maybe use them (or not). 10:00:00 start time SHARP (we're not waiting for anyone) :-)

A walk in the woods in the badfish Creek recreation area. Meet at 3260 Old stage road parking lot also canoe launch if you're so inclined dry suit probably a good idea. Trail is a lightly snow covered. Well packed. No need to be concerned about ice or anything as best I could tell. Should be a good day

Al worked 42 years for WDNR in the forestry program as a field forester, pathologist and administrator. Al enjoys painting and traveling to Florida in the winter. He is also a daily lap swimmer. Al is one of the two Founders of the Madison Bike and Bowl Team. Al P.

Becky is a retired vice-president of the Madison Area College. She serves on the Fitchburg City Council and is very active in her church. Becky B.
Bill reported on government and politics for United Press International. He's the founder of the Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin, creator of the GRABAAWR bicycle ride along the Wisconsin River, and also directed the SAGBRAW bicycle event. He's now working on improving Wisconsin's recreational and transportation trail system. Bill H.
Bill is a retired lieutenant from the Madison Fire Department. He is now a part time instructor in the fire science program at the Madison Area College. Bill B.
Bill spent his adult life in public education: 24 1/2 years as a teacher; 2 years as a high school assistant-principal (misery for sure); 10 years as a high school principal; and, 4 years as a superintendent of schools. He has been married to his dear Ruby Kay for almost 40 years. Bill blabs incessantly about their two kids: Stephanie who lives and works in Houston; and, Mathieu (aka Bud) who lives and works in Milwaukee. Life is good! Bill D.

Bob spent 36 years at DNR managing southern Wisconsin’s waters. He is currently working very part time for a consulting firm practicing his passion for fixing streams. Other pastimes include tending to his prairie and vegetable gardens and cheering on the Badger football and basketball teams. Bob retired in 2008 after 33 years as Civil and Environmental Engineer with WDNR working primarily in the field of wastewater treatment. He and wife, Nan, like to travel, attend UW football, basketball and hockey games as time permits. Bob is also active with Wisconsin Public Television, the neighborhood association, church, and retirement activities like the bike and bowl group, DNR golf league and card games with fellow retirees. Five years ago, I retired from a 39 year career in teaching. My hobbies are reading, writing, auditing classes at UW, road biking and spending time with my new grandson. Cheryl G.
Since the1980's I have owned eight bikes of various types, and actually raced a mountain bike in the WORBA series in the early 90’s (Have four bikes now). I have ridden many multi-day trips both loaded and with shuttled luggage in the United States, Europe, England, Scotlsnd and SE Asia and over 30,000 miles on one bike or another with a lot of it on the Badger Trail. David spent most of his career as an assistant legal counsel for DATCP. He was the attorney for the Wisconsin consumer protection program writing laws and rules for the marketplace and bringing enforcement actions against violators. David retired this past June (2015) and is devoting his time to biking, gardening, and pursuing other shared interests with his wife Rose. Dave G.

Daryl retired in 2017 after almost 31 years at the State Legislature's nonpartisan budget office. He enjoys road & trail biking and touring during warmer months and XC skiing in winter. Earl is one of the Founders of the Madison Bike and Bowl Team. He retired from WDNR's Bureau of Forestry in 1986, and died of esophageal cancer in 2006. Earl M.

Gaylord retired as Real Estate Officer of Dane County in March 2013 after 27 years of government service acquiring land for public buildings, parks, and trails. His interests include biking, birding, and reading. He continues to brokerage real estate on a referral basis only. Gaylord P.

Gene retired from the WDNR's Waste and Materials Management Program in 2009 after 32 years of service, working both in the Madison Central office (starting at the Pyare Square Bldg) and at SCR's Fish Hatchery Rd office. During that time he worked as a plan review engineer, regional program manager and section chief. He also had the opportunity to work with EPA in Washington on a number of environmental initiatives. Jerry retired in 1996 after 33 years as an engineer with WDNR. The Bureau of Engineering performed or coordinated all construction activities for the Department, statewide, including state parks, forests, recreation trails, fish hatcheries and office facilities. Ken is a retired Civil Engineer and was the Director of Dane County Public Works for 26 years. The department was responsible for new building construction; solid waste program, lake levels and aquatic weed harvesting. He is married to Carol and they have two children and four grandchildren. He teaches canoe and kayak building classes. Ken has been going to the Quetico Provincial park for 47 years and has over seventy-five trips! Ken K.
Ken worked as a professor at UW-Madison from 1985-2018 when he retired. He was UW’s Forest Entomologist, and frequently collaborated with DNR, DATCP, and USFS personnel. Ken lives in the near west side of Madison with his wife, and has 2 daughters and 3 grandkids. He grew up in Wilmington, Delaware and was born in Irvington New Jersey. At various times he lived in Pullman WA, Philadelphia PA, and Asheville NC. Ken R.

He now spends his time biking, hiking and golfing in the summer, and downhill skiing in the winter. His fitness goal is simply to stay above ground. Larry also spends time volunteering for local conservation projects and building wooden canoes and kayaks. Larry and his wife Jackie enjoy traveling and biking rail trails all around the country. Ted retired from the WDNR Division of Forestry in 2007 after 33 years of service. He had a number of assignments in both fire and forest management. As an additional duty, for about 18 years he was the first line supervisor responsible for the maintenance of the Portage levee system. Ted passed away in 2018. Ted P.
Terry is retired from the insurance business. Terry J.
Terry is a lieutenant/paramedic with the City of Madison Fire Department and 49 year old lucky husband and father of two 9,10 year old children and so far Cancer stage 3 survivor of 3 rounds of chemo and 3 surgeries. Community volunteer : local, national and international. His favorite bike tour is Ride the Rockies. Other hobbies include: ice hockey, everything outdoors, and his children=family first. Terry R.
Tom is retired from the UW having supervised the dairy operation at Babcock Hall on the UW Madison campus. Several times a year Tom treats the group to a sampling of the latest ice cream flavors! He also enjoys woodworking and playing chess. Tom passed away in 2020. Tom B.

Will grew up in and around Chicago, taught Spanish in Milwaukee, practiced law in Madison and was staff counsel to the WI Supreme Court twenty-two years, retiring 2014. He spent twelve years as part-time land manager for Dane County Parks dealing with new properties. He volunteers with DCP chainsaw and prescribed burn crews, Holy Wisdom Monastery prairie development and Habitat for Humanity deconstruction crew. Will M.
